Red light therapy for shoulder pain

Shoulders are awkward to treat with a heat pad. A wrap that stays put makes twenty minutes easy.

The kind of shoulder ache this suits

Stiffness reaching up to a shelf, a dull ache lying on that side at night, soreness after gardening or decorating. Not suited: sudden severe pain, a shoulder you cannot move at all, or pain after a fall.

Placement

  • Lay the panel over the top and front of the shoulder, where the ache is worst.
  • Fasten the strap across the chest and under the other arm.
  • Bare skin — a vest strap is fine if it is not over the panel.

Routine

Twenty minutes once a day, sitting back in a chair. Pair it with the gentle movement your physio recommends. Expect warmth in week one and judge it at weeks four to six.

See a GP if

  • You cannot lift your arm at all
  • The pain followed a fall or injury
  • You have chest pain, breathlessness or pain spreading to the jaw — call 999

Common questions

Is red light therapy good for shoulder pain?+

Many people use it for the stiff, aching sort of shoulder, used daily over several weeks. Sudden severe pain, or pain after a fall, should be checked by a GP first.

How do I use a red light wrap on my shoulder?+

Drape the wrap over the top of the shoulder so the lit panel covers the front and side, then fasten the strap under the opposite arm. Bare skin, 20 minutes, once a day.

Can I use it on a frozen shoulder?+

Speak to your GP or physiotherapist first. If they are happy, it can sit alongside the exercises they give you — it does not replace them.
